Photos of camp, NYFW 2023, the Harry Potter design studio, et al.
September 2023
Watching
↔ Kill Your Darlings (2013) was very heavy and very male. It reminded me of the closing line from “Barbie Answers Oppenheimer” by Anne Helen Peterson that says, “If Oppenheimer asks: Why and how do men seek dominion over one another? What can the (male) mind imagine? Why does (male) genius corrode? Then the answer of Barbie is: Great questions. But what if we asked some different ones?”
Watched for Daniel Radcliffe and gay stuff and would watch again for Daniel Radcliffe and gay stuff.
↔ Collina Strada’s eerie spring 2024 show “Soft is Hard” highlights the absurdity of fashion with big BIG smiles and future-forward methods, using ai heavily during the visioning process.
Model walking to you ( ͡⊙ ͜ʖ ͡⊙) ………. Model walking away (◎̀ ͟ʖ ́◎)
I’ve been learning to sew recently so the garments and creative direction in NYFW this year are extra boggling to me.
Noodling On
↔ My last full-length Desire Path post, (No. 12) Road Closed on Memory Lane, was about a summer camp I went to as a kid. I knew I couldn’t include too many photos in that post or I’d want to include the lot.
Here are some more photos from the 2000s, captured on disposable camera, point and shoot, and maybe an iPod. I don’t have many but I cherish the few I have.
↔ I wish I had more occasions to use the phrase ‘mise en scène’
Seeing
↔ I’ve always assumed the Potter universe feels so tactile and possible through props designed and described by Rowling in the source material. But as descriptive as she was, there was no illustration for how the props look, and much of what we visualize now for the world originates from the MinaLima graphic design studio.
Honorable mention to my favorites, the Advanced Potion Making textbook and early issues of the Daily Prophet with large text wiggling through paragraphs.
Reading
↔ “Unlock Your Inner Beauty (With Your Outer Beauty)” - Jessica Defino
↔ “The Bloomsbury Group Is Back in Vogue, The bohemian English circle that included Virginia Woolf, Duncan Grant, and Vanessa Bell revolted against Victorian formality—and their casually ornamental style is inspiring designers today” - Rebecca Mead
↔ Frederick - Leo Lionni (Children’s book, about bio: Frederick, the poet mouse, stores up something special for the long cold winter)
